Store planning
How to Plan a Shop Layout That Actually Sells
Walk first, fixtures second. Keep the first two metres clear, put the wrap last, load the walls, and give the floor one story — not a gondola maze.
How to plan a shop layout that actually sells: decide the walk first, then the fixtures. Independent retailers usually start with a photograph of a wall or a rack. The shops that convert start with the door, the first two metres, the cash wrap, and one feature — then hang and shelf the rest so customers can still pass each other.
This is merchandising sequence for 20–80 square metre shops in Thailand, not a department-store grid and not an interior-design manifesto. Fixture names come after the zones. The buyer’s guide is the catalogue of pieces; this page is the order you place them.
The sequence
- Door and decompression. The first two metres inside are for orientation. No four-way, no tee grid, no cash wrap. If the shutter or mall glass is the “window,” the first interior bay is still not a warehouse of faces.
- Sightline to a person and a story. From the door the customer should see a mannequin or a feature table, and eventually the wrap — not a wall of stock.
- Cash wrap location. Last in the walk, first in operations. Against a back or side wall on 30–60 sqm. Cash wrap planning. Queue must not close fitting rooms or the door. Mall vs street changes where that queue may legally sit.
- Perimeter walls. Size run and sitting product. Slatwall vs grid vs peg. If you cannot drill, freestanding slatwall.
- One floor story. A rail, a table, or a four-way — not all three competing. Racks vs slatwall.
- Fitting rooms if apparel. Hooks, close, light. They are fixtures.
- Accessories and lighting last as line items. Empty grooves and unlit cases are unfinished specifications.
How much shelving is the metre math after this sequence, not before. Six weeks to opening is the calendar.
Zones that keep showing up
Perimeter. Depth. Hangrail, shallow shelf, beauty facing. This is where the SKU list lives.
Feature. The thing you change every two weeks. Table, waterfall group, one outfit.
Service. Wrap, packing, returns. Beauty testers are a service zone of their own — cosmetics — not a pile on the wrap.
Back. Overflow. If it is on the floor, it is not back of house.
A centre gondola is a supermarket zone. In under 50 sqm it usually splits the shop into two corridors nobody asked for.
Fashion vs beauty vs gift
Same sequence, different density. Fashion: hang-heavy perimeter, sparse floor. Beauty: shallow facing, tester run, almost no island. Gift: mixed hook and shelf, still one walk. Do not steal the 40 sqm fashion list for cosmetics.
Common mistakes
- Fixture first. The wrap lands in the door.
- Every zone is a feature. Nothing is a story.
- Full walls, no walk. Conversion dies.
- Copying a foreign flagship. Different ceiling, different labour, different landlord.
What to send
Shop type, size, mall or street, a sketch with the door, and the opening month. Thai or English. We will turn zones into a fixture schedule — walls, one story, one wrap — on a single written quotation.
Walk, wrap, walls, one story
If you are opening a shop in Thailand, send the door and the size before you send a rack photograph. We will plan the layout as a walk that sells, then specify the fixtures that support it — Thai or English, one document.
Common questions
- Should I pick slatwall before I plan the walk?
- No. Decide door, wrap and zones first. The wall system is how the perimeter holds the SKU list, not the starting photograph.
- How many feature points should a small shop have?
- One primary story on the floor, plus the door sightline. More features cancel each other in 40 sqm.
- Does this layout work in a mall and on the street?
- The sequence stays. Mounting, queue rules and frontage change. Read mall vs street with this page.
- Can you design a full interior from this?
- No. This is a fixture-and-walk sequence. Ceilings, MEP and a full design package are a separate programme.
